“With The Town, Ben Affleck proves that he can open a movie—if he directs it. Not only did the Warner/Legendary movie score with critics at Venice and Toronto fests (earning a remarkable 93% on the Tomatometer) but it beat out the weekend boxoffice competition with a $23.8 million estimate. That’s a big leap from advance tracking predicting a $15-million opener.”

Weekend movie report

Avatar continues to be as hard to displace as the Na’vi, again winning the box office title ($36 million, down only 15.9 percent) and notching the highest IMDB score of any film in the box-office top 20. With $552 million in sales to date, it should pass Titanic next month to become the top-grossing film of all-time (not adjusted for inflation).

The Tooth Fairy, Dwayne Johnson’s latest family-friendly flick, proved as enjoyable as a root canal for most critics and moviegoers. It landed with a thud at No. 19 at both Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. Box office was respectable, with the pic’s $14.5 million take ranking No. 4.
