John Cena has taken the WWE Championship from Freedom graduate Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson during WrestleMania 29 Sunday at New Jersey’s Met Life Stadium.

Cena who won the title for the unprecedented 11th time, was in a rematch with the Rock at the main event of the WWE championship. Last year at WrestleMania 28, The Rock defeated Cena and this year’s match was touted as an epic rematch. Although The Rock seemed to be on the way to a second win early on in front on a crowd that seemed to be rooting primarily for the People’s Champion, Cena was able to turn the match around and pull out the defeat. Showing good sportsmanship, the two long-time rivals hugged after the match.

The WWE said Sunday’s show had been the MetLife Stadium’s all-time highest grossing event earning $12.3 million from 80,676 guests.

On social media, many fans suggested that The Rock has been too busy with his film career to be able to train properly for the match, although it’s been reported that the Rock has a ring set up so he can practice wherever he is filming.

He is cuurently shooting  “Hercules: The Thracian Wars,” based on the Radical Publishing “Hercules” comic books of which there were two series; “The Thracian Wars” and “The Knives of Kush,” both written by Steve Moore with art by Cris Bolsin.

The Rock will portray Hercules, the powerful son of the god king Zeus. According to IMDB the movie will follow Hercules, who “after twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle. Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time. It is time for this bunch of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen when they must train an army to become as ruthless and blood thirsty as their reputation has become.”

The Rock, who attended Freedom in 11th and 12th grade, left the WWE in 2003 to pursue an acting career that quickly took off with a starring role in “The Scorpion King,”

His latest action flick “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” came out last week and was the number o1 new movie Easter weekend. Coming up is Michael Bay’s “Pain & Gain” April 26 and “The Fast and the Furious 6,” May 23. “Empire State” has not set a release date but also is slated to come out sometime in 2013.

Johnson is also attached to  New Line’s “Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon,” a sequel to the hit movie “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island;” will portray Sinbad in “Arabian Nights” in 2014 and  is planning to air his self-produce reality show “The Hero” in which 10 housemates compete against one another in missions that will test their brains, their brawn and their morality, in June.

The Rock On Why He Returned To WWE, Previews WrestleMania 29 Match With John Cena

The Rock On Why He Returned To WWE, Previews WrestleMania 29 Match With John Cena

Source: IGN

Previewing his upcoming match with John  Cena at WrestleMania  29 to IGN.com, WWE Champion Dwayne  “The Rock” Johnson explained why he  wanted to face the Cenation leader again after defeating him at last year’s  show.”You have to understand that my return back into the WWE was years in the  making. And since I’ve been back, it’s been a three year-long journey that  started at WrestleMania 27 in Atlanta. So John has always been my first choice,”  Johnson told Matt Fowler.

While contemplating his return to the sports-entertainment organization years  ago, Johnson revealed that he wanted to  work with the wrestler who he felt would generate the biggest business.

“Here’s the thing,” said Johnson. “The question was that if I was going to go  back in the WWE, how could I go back and make the most impact? With who can I  headline WrestleMania in that company and make the most impact? And the bottom  line is that it continues to be John Cena. Just in terms of, and we’ll use a  Hollywood term here, box office appeal. Universal appeal. Athletic pairing. So  there are a lot of reasons.”

The Hollywood heavyweight also says he returned to WWE to give back; to  elevate the company that led to his success as well as elevate their “number one  hero.”

Johnson continued, “With some great drama, some great emotion. This scenario  for me is one that I’ve honestly dreamed of. A dream match. And what I’m talking  about is being able to go back to the WWE and give back to the business, which  is in my blood and has allowed me a platform to perform which then, twelve years  ago, allowed me to make he transition to Hollywood. So the scenario I’ve dreamed  of is that I’m able to go back, become WWE Champion, go into the what is  considered the biggest marketplace in the world, which is the New York City  area, at MetLife Stadium and headline WrestleMania as champion and give back to  the business, the fans, the company and their number one hero. So I couldn’t  have asked for a better scenario and we’re going to have a blast.”

Regarding the WrestleMania bout itself, Johnson said, “I think we’re  going to have a great match and my hope is that it’s going to be a  classic.”

Johnson debuts on our Celebrity 100 this year.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s formula for box office success is twofold: “I can kick ass better than anyone on the planet,” he says. “And I have a decent smile.”

He flashes his teeth winningly to try to underscore his point. But the numbers are more impressive: This 6-foot-5 wrestler’s 15 movies have grossed more than $2.3 billion at the global box office. Then there’s how he’s done it. Rather than launch franchises, Johnson saves them. Last year he climbed onboard the tired Fast and Furious series and turned Fast Five into the franchise’s highest-grossing film ($626 million). Then he took over Journey to the Center of the Earth from Brendan Fraser, and Journey 2brought in $81 million more than its predecessor. Next up: the second installment of G.I. Joe.

Producers have taken note: We estimate The Rock earned $36 million in the last 12 months, and his first spot on The FORBES Celebrity 100 seems to be a floor, not a ceiling.

“The second you see Dwayne on screen,” says Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman, “it’s like everything you ever imagined in an action hero and then some.”

A college football star, Johnson broke into entertainment as a pro wrestler in 1996, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather (his wrestling moniker, Rocky Maivia, combined their names). While his dad was upset—he had spent years getting pounded in high school gyms nationwide and struggled to support young Dwayne and the family—Johnson recognized that pro wrestling in the 1990s offered more upside than it did for generations past.

Still, cast in the role of a good guy, fans quickly tired of his nonstop smiling attitude and began to chant, “Rocky sucks!” Faced with the prospect of failing, Johnson implored World Wrestling Entertainment head Vince McMahon to give him 30 seconds onlive TV to respond to the fans.

Throwing off the sunny, third-generation Rocky character dreamed up by the WWE, he became The Rock, and he antagonized the crowd right back. They ate it up. Now a funny bad guy with a penchant for catchphrases, a star was born. When fans would try to join in on a chorus of “Do you smell what The Rock is cooking?” He would cut them off and yell, “This ain’t sing-a-long with The Rock!” And they loved him for it.

Hollywood came calling in 2001. Johnson took a small part in The Mummy Returns and was immediately bitten by the acting bug. The next year he starred in a Mummy spinoff, The Scorpion King, which earned $165 million worldwide. Johnson continued to wrestle, playing up his new movie fame by pretending to be too big for the WWE and singing songs mocking whatever city he was performing in. And eventually he did get too big: By 2006 he had basically retired from the ring.

Around that time Johnson’s movie career took a strange turn. The Rock found himself at the center of family films like Gridiron GangThe Game Plan andRace to Witch Mountain.

“When he was wrestling, he was at 270 pounds and the ruler of the world,” says Dany Garcia, his manager and ex-wife. “When he went into movies he dropped to 230 pounds and they told him to stop talking about wrestling.”

To Johnson and Garcia, who’s been an integral part of Johnson’s career since they met as teens, it felt very much like the early days with the WWE when Johnson was encouraged to play a character that didn’t quite fit. “It reached a point where I felt that instead of me trying to conform to Hollywood, I needed to have Hollywood conform to me and embrace my past,” says Johnson.

So last year Johnson took matters into his own hands. He ditched his agents at CAA in favor of Ari Emanuel’s WME, decided to focus mostly on action movies—and decided to start wrestling again. “People love him as a wrestler,” says WME’s Brad Slater, “and because he left seven years ago, there’s a whole generation of young fans who never saw him.” In April The Rock fought John Cena in a Wrestlemania battle, the most-watched in the history of the 27-year event, which raked in $67 million, thanks to 1.3 million pay-per-view downloads in 105 countries.

Such wrestling cred only burnishes his action hero status, allowing him to become, as Goodman of Paramount says, “toyetic.” And there are many more merchandise-friendly roles lined up in his immediate future. After G.I. Joethere’s Snitch, about a father who goes undercover to try to free his imprisoned son. Then Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain, where Johnson costars with Mark Wahlberg as a couple of former bodybuilders who kidnap a rich man and try to steal his life. After that he’ll hit Fast and Furious 6, and he’s just attached himself to Lore, based on a graphic novel about a man fighting legendary beasts.

The studios are falling over one another not just because of his newfound box office power but also because of his unwavering enthusiasm when it comes to promoting his films. Most stars negotiate how few days they’ll have to be on the road promoting their films. Johnson is happy to talk about how he can help promote the film from day one.

“That’s the wonderful part about being in this business,” says Johnson. “I love knowing the audience and listening to the audience.” Oh, and kicking a little ass, too.

BOOK EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 2
“Written in The Stars” – the epic, chart-topping rap from Tinie Tempah – not only served as the memorable anthem for WrestleMania 27, it also stands as a fitting theme for the career of Dwayne Johnson – “The Rock.”
In early 2011, after a seven year absence from the industry that made him an icon, Dwayne Johnson returned to WWE. And while his comeback drew international media attention – and, correspondingly, big bucks for the WWE – few outside observers had any true knowledge of how Johnson’s return may have done significantly more than just electrify the masses. It may have also saved the WWE from what some called the beginning of a precipitous creative decline capable of potentially crippling the lone superpower of pro wrestling in short order.
BOOK EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 6
The Rock, in his first match back since heading for Hollywood seven years earlier, was in rare form at the Survivor Series. He showed little, if any, signs of ring rust. And, arguably, he proved himself to be one of the most athletic and technically sound wrestlers currently on the WWE roster.
With 17,000 New Yorkers chanting “You still got it” within the contest’s opening minutes, it was obvious that The Rock’s natural athletic talent wouldn’t skip a beat no matter how much time he had spent away from the squared circle.
And on that night, the unlikely tag team of John Cena and The Rock defeated (trounced, in fact) R-Truth and The Miz, all while the Madison Square Garden faithful booed Cena out of the building when not chanting “Rocky! Rocky!”
