Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson remembers his friend and costar

Dwayne-Johnson-Paul-Walker.jpg

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared the screen with Paul Walker on 2011′s Fast Five and 2013′s Fast & Furious 6. In honor of Walker, who passed away Nov. 30, Johnson called EW to reflect on his friend and costar.

Dwayne Johnson: That was one of the interesting things about Paul: his reservations about being in the spotlight and being a star, whatever the definition of that may be. He was motivated by work that allowed him to take care of his family, number one, and that also allowed him the power and the leverage to help people in need and in crisis. When I first met Paul, I think in our late 20s, we were young kids in the business. Then years later, when I did Fast Five, we had an opportunity to spend a lot of time together and become reacquainted. At that time, we had both been in the business at that time for over a decade, and the most important thing that we had in common was the importance of family time and being a great father to our daughters. We bonded over that.

Paul talked about how much his life changed when his daughter moved in with him. As a friend, could you see that?
It was always the number one topic we would talk about. We would talk about silly guy things, his fast cars and my pickup trucks, or we would talk about the beautiful energy of Hawai’i — but it always ultimately came back to family. And very specifically the beautiful and important bond between a father and his daughter, and how we both realized that over the years. Not surprisingly, when I got the news that he had passed away, the first words out of my mouth were, “He has a daughter.” It’s very sad. We can’t help but to hope that their final time together was beautiful and strong and an amazing memory.

What was it like working with him on the Fast & Furious movies?
Paul came prepared. He spent a lot of time on the road with police officers and a lot of time handling weapons to make sure he was incredibly proficient. When you see Paul onscreen, you 100% push all your chips in to the authenticity with which he plays his roles. With Fast Five, even though I had known the majority of the actors over the years, they were essentially a tight knit family and a very strong unit. In front of the camera, there’s a lot of action and a lot of frenetic energy. And off camera, there’s a lot of action and a lot of frenetic energy. [laughs] Which I’m sure you’ve heard about. Paul was very welcoming, and a very calming presence on set.

Dwayne Johnson Star in NOT WITHOUT HOPE

dwayne-johnson-fast-furious-6-slice

Quickly becoming the hardest working guy in Hollywood, actor Dwayne Johnson is adding another project to his to-do list.  It was announced today that Johnson has attached himself to lead an adaptation of the best-selling memoir Not Without Hope for Relativity.  Written by Nick Schuyler, the book recounts a 2009 fishing trip Schuyler took with four of his friends (including NFL players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith) in the Gulf of Mexico that turned into a disaster when their boat capsized, stranding them at sea.  It’s a harrowing account in the vein of Into Thin Air and should make for a nice dramatic vehicle for Johnson, who has recently been busy rejuvenating franchises left and right.

The actor recently wrapped Hercules: The Thracian Wars with director Brett Ratner and is currently reprising his role in Fast & Furious 7.  He is also poised to return for G.I. Joe 3 and is attached to lead a number of developing projects including San AndreasThe Fall GuyLore, and the supernatural actioner Seal Team 666.  Read the press release after the jump.

(Beverly Hills, Calif.) November 12, 2013 – Relativity announced today that it has acquired the worldwide rights to finance, produce and distribute the currently titled Not Without Hope, based on Nick Schuyler’s New York Times best-selling memoir about four friends embarking on a  deep-sea fishing trip gone awry. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Fast & Furious 6, Pain and Gain) is attached to star as Nick Schuyler.

Robbie Brenner, President of Production for Relativity, commented: “Nick Schuyler’s book is extremely moving, and Relativity is proud to work with The Rock, Nick and the entire team on creating a movie that honors this powerful story.”

Based on the New York Times best-selling memoir, Not Without Hope is a gripping true story of four friends whose fishing adventure 70 miles from shore in the Gulf of Mexico would become a nightmare beyond all imagination. On a brisk February morning, Nick Schuyler embarked from Clearwater, FL on a deep-sea fishing trip with three friends: NFL players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith, and Nick’s best friend, Will Bleakley, a former University of South Florida football player, until the foursome made a tragic decision that caused the 21 foot vessel to capsize. The days that followed would find the four friends in the middle of a storm clinging to the overturned boat – facing hypothermia, hunger, and dehydration in a grueling fight to survive. Not Without Hope is a harrowing, yet inspiring tale of courage, sacrifice, and friendship.

Nick Schuyler, a former football player himself who is a personal trainer and resides in the Tampa Bay area, added: “I’m humbled that Relativity was interested in paying tribute to Marquis, Corey and Will, and I was impressed with their vision for the film and how they wanted to honor how these guys lived, loved their families, friends and teammates.”

Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh will produce the film, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dany Garcia, Relativity President Tucker Tooley, Rick French, Chairman & CEO of Raleigh based French/West/Vaughan, executive producing. Hiram Garcia serves as co-executive producer. Brett Dahl, Relativity’s Vice President of Production, is overseeing the project for the studio.

Dwayne Johnson Locked In For Hercules

Dwayne Johnson, Fast Five

Man-mountain, gymspiration, walking charm factory and friend to set-visiting journalists Dwayne Johnson was linked back in February with a seemingly perfect role: HerculesNow, after a few months of negotiation and figuring out his hectic schedule, Johnson has locked in the lead.

Brett Ratner will direct the film, which is now being co-produced by Paramount and MGM. The plot will be based on Radical Studios’ Hercules: The Thracian Wars, created by Steve Moore.

SET VISIT: Fast Five Part 3

movieweb.com

Yesterday, we continued to tell you about our recent visit to the set of Fast Five in Atlanta, Georgia, which opens in theaters on April 29th. The movie is a continuation of the popular car series, The Fast and the Furious. Not only will the new film feature the series’ stars, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Jordana Brewster, but also the return of actors from throughout the series including Sung Kang from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris from 2 Fast 2 Furious, Matt Schulze from The Fast and the Furious, and Gal Gadot from Fast & Furious.

Fast Five picks up soon after the events of the last film, finding Brian (Walker) and Mia (Brewster) hiding in Rio with Dom (Diesel), after breaking him out of police custody. Soon an opportunity arises that could give the trio a chance to win back their freedom, but it will take the help of some familiar friends in order to pull it off. Eventually the gang realizes that they will never be truly free until they take on the ruthless businessman who wants them dead. Meanwhile, federal agent Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson (Faster), is assigned to find Brian and Dom … and Hobbs always catches his man. But as Hobbs gets closer to Dom and Brian, he realizes that things are not as they seem and no one can be trusted.

After speaking with actress Elsa Pataky and actor Dwayne Johnson, who both join the series with this film, we had an opportunity to talk with a few of the returning cast members. Actor Matt Schulze, who has been absent from the series since the original film, returns as Vince. In the first movie, Vince was Dom’s best friend and in love with his sister Mia. In Fast Five, Vince meets up with Dom and Mia in Rio, and soon realizes that Brian has taken his place. We had a chance to sit down and talk with Schulze, and we began by asking the actor how Vince feels when he reunites with his friends and sees that Brian is with them. “There’s an uneasiness for sure and he’ll probably always be a little jealous. Even though he doesn’t necessarily want to be with Mia anymore. But there’s always going to be jealousy that, that could have been me … or should have been,” Schulze answered. We followed up by asking if Vince feels any animosity towards Dom? “For sure, yeah. I think Vince wants to be the leader, but he’s just not quite smart enough and he makes mistakes. It’s out of his own selfishness for only looking out for himself and not the team. I think in this one he tries to find that sense of humbleness.”

We asked Schulze to explain how his character has changed since the first movie? “He’s stronger, but he has a heart now, which is a little different. Everything you saw in that first one I sort of created. In this one I sort of did the same thing again. I just wanted to transfer it in a way that I can make it real for me as an actor. Every character I do has a little bit of an evolution of myself.” The actor then began to tell us the back-story that he created for his character, which explains what he has been up to since the first film. “There was a minimal line of what it was, but we added the top and bottom to it,” Schulze said. “He abandoned everything and ended up getting to Rio to do his own Scarface kind of thing. But like I said, he’s not that smart, so he still has nothing. He’s living in these ramshackle ghettos with his wife, and he has a child now, so he is living off the environment. Sort of like when Kurtz went into the jungle in Apocalypse Now, Vince went into his own jungle and became one with what that was. I think he’s happy with that … the rawness of it.”

The actor continued to discuss how Vince reacts, the first time he is reintroduced to Dom and Mia. “When Dom and I see each other, we don’t make a big deal about it. Dom and I are just understated,” Schulze explained. “I wanted to make sure that when I saw Jordana in this film that I was extremely loving towards her, because that was Vince’s evolution.” With all the returning actors from the various films that Schulze did not appear in, we asked him to explain how Vince reacts to meeting these new characters? “I don’t pay attention to them. I’m very selfish that way. What I did as Vince on screen, is also Vince off screen. I don’t try to bond with them or do anything of that nature. It keeps things clean for me as an actor. I’m a method actor, so what I do on screen, I do off screen as well.”

Finally, we asked the actor why he decided to return to the franchise after so many years? “I had spent the past two years not sure if I wanted to do another movie ever again, to be honest. So I’ve been doing the Ironman and Triathlons in my free time, but I didn’t understand what it was like to be an actor,” Schulze explained. “I had been homeless for the past two years. I was sleeping in a tent in the woods in Malibu. As crazy as this is, I was fighting and doing all this stuff. I was fighting in a cage and I always see The Dalai Lama when he comes to town. He came in to town, I saw him for twelve hours and he asked me to not fight anymore. A week later I get the phone call for this and I was thinking to myself, okay, this is fate. Then I read the script and I don’t really do anything violent for the entire film, for the most part. So I was thinking this is a good transfer of energy to get me back to a different place. As much as it is a rebirth for Vince in the franchise, it’s a rebirth for me in a lot of ways too.”

Also returning to the series is actress Gal Gadot, who was first introduced in the last film, Fast & Furious, and plays Gisele Harabo. Gisele is a former-liaison to drug dealer Arturo Braga, the villain in the previous film, and also served as a love interest for Dom. When we spoke to Gadot, we began by asking her to explain exactly how her character is reintroduced in this movie? “The first time I appear in the movie is a big scene when basically all the stars from the previous movies come together. It’s a good scene because from the moment she is there she already shows her power and her strength. I am talking about her power as a woman. She is the only woman in one room with a lot of testosterone and big guys, and she is very strong.”

The actress went on to discuss her character’s role in the film. “Obviously in the last movie Gisele put in jeopardy everything she had in order to help Brian and Dom. In this one they already have their relationship established so she is coming there to help a friend in need. She comes to Rio without knowing what she is going to do. All she knows is that it is going to have a lot to do with adventure and action,” explained Gadot.

We followed up by asking how the other characters in the movie deal with a strong woman entering their ranks? “When they just get to know her they are very stunned by her. She is not a regular type of girl. She is a lot like them. At the beginning it is hard for them to digest it but as the movie progresses, they get to know her and they love her. She becomes one of the guys.” We then asked Gadot if Gisele has an opportunity to bond with Mia in the film? “Yeah, it’s nice. Actually in the last one I didn’t get to work with any of the girls, neither did Jordana or Michelle. But in this one I get to work with Jordana and she is awesome.” We also asked the actress if there is any friction between Gisele and Mia in the film? “No nothing. They are like a big happy family. The Fast & Furious meets The Brady Bunch,” answered Gadot.

Given the fact that there are so many characters from the previous movies in this film, we asked Gadot if she feels like her character is fundamentally important to this story, or if she is just there to connect this movie to the last one? “Well both, and I believe that in this one we have a lot of stars. To start with myself, I was debating on how this would work, to work with so many people who have done big parts in their lives. Actually it works really, really well because we all have a good chemistry and we all have the same target,” Gadot explained. “We all want this movie to be a huge success and to be a good movie. So I think that it shows in the movie. Our relationship is that we help each other. We are there for each other and my character helps to progress the plot. I believe that actually working with so many stars in this one makes this movie much more interesting because we all work very well together and it shows.”

Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in Fast Five

Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in Fast Five

Finally, we asked Gadot if she would be interested in staying with the franchise for another installment, and if she hopes that her character can grow and become more important in future chapters? “The Fast & Furious franchise is already a part of my career. I started acting three years ago and my first feature was Fast & Furious. Working here with the same director, same actors, and same producers is already comfortable for me. If I do the next one or not, I don’t know? It will depend on the script,” Gadot answered.

Actress Jordana Brewster began her career starring in Robert Rodriguez‘s The Faculty, but it was her role as Mia Toretto in The Fast and the Furious that made her a household name. The actress declined to return for the film’s first two sequels, but instead went on to star in Annapolis, with James Franco, and her Fast Five co-star Tyrese Gibson. Eventually, Brewster agreed to return for Fast & Furious, along with original stars Paul Walker and Vin Diesel, which reunited her with Annapolis director, Justin Lin. Brewster once again reprises the role that made her famous, playing Dom Toretto’s sister and Brian O’Conner’s love interest, Mia, in Fast Five.

When we sat down to speak with Jordana Brewster, she began by telling us what her character has been doing since the last film, when we first see her in the new movie. “When the audience meets Brian and Mia, they are on the run and they’ve been on the run for six to eight months. So they’re roughing it and she’s in a completely different place in life. Whereas before she was the one at home, waiting for the boys and holding down the fort, she’s now in it with them. So it’s a really different place to be in and a really fun phase in her life to be able to play.” We followed up by asking if we will see the conclusion of the final scene from Fast & Furious, and actually see how Brian and Mia broke Dom out of custody? “No, they don’t show it,” Brewster replied.

The actress went on to discuss her relationship with Annapolis director Justin Lin, and what it has been like working with him again on Fast & Furious, and now Fast Five. “Justin’s really, really loyal. He works with the same people over and over again, like my make-up artist, who is now the head of the make-up department,” Brewster explained. “He worked on Better Luck Tomorrow and also on Tokyo Drift. So you can tell Justin likes working with the same people, which I’m really grateful for. I keep saying it, but it still holds true. The thing that I admire the most about Justin is that on these ridiculously high-budget movies, he keeps his calm. When the blank hits the fan, he’s still mellow and you need that kind of presence on set because I think from the director it trickles down. He’s just so great to work for,” Brewster said.

We also asked Brewster what it has been like for her to work with so many actors and characters from the franchise that she has never appeared with before? “It was interesting because there was a period of readjustment between the first and the fourth films. It felt like the first day at school where I hadn’t seen Paul for a long time and then I saw him again. I hadn’t seen Vin for a while, then it was just like readjusting,” she said. “In Puerto Rico, we all had a shorthand, a way of working with each other, and it’s just like we’re all friends. But then when we got to Atlanta, it felt like a new cast. It was Tyrese, who I did work with on Annapolis, and Ludacris, who I am a huge fan of. But again it was like the first day at school where you’re just like, oh my God, I have to get used to being around new people. So on one hand it’s great because you get to work with people you really admire, but there was like a period of adjusting for a couple of hours the first day.”

Fast Five hits theaters everywhere April 29th

Fast Five hits theaters everywhere April 29th

We followed up by asking the actress if she had any concerns about having so many characters in the one film? “I think with something of this scope, once I started reading the script, I wasn’t that worried about this many characters being in the movie. It all makes sense,” Brewster replied. “It works really well, I think, especially with the addition of Dwayne Johnson. He’s such a pro and watching him work too, he’s just so charismatic. So that’s also a treat for me. I think it does infuse the franchise with some new blood and some new energy,” she added.

Next, we asked Brewster to discuss Mia’s relationship with Brian and how it has evolved since the last movie. “Well, he kind of screwed her over. In the last one, I feel like I needed to see more, because he really left for a while and betrayed her big time. But in this one, they’re together a lot,” she explained. “She couldn’t help it, I guess. She forgave him and they are a couple. There’s no more tension. They’re on the run and the stakes are so high that it’s just about cohesiveness and sticking together, or you’re done. So yeah, they’re together in this one.”

Finally, we asked Brewster if she gets to do a lot of driving in this movie? “Only the kind where you’re in front of a green screen, which is pretty awesome,” the actress joked. “In Puerto Rico I got to jump off a building with Paul and that was awesome. That was really fun, so there’s a lot more action for me in this movie, which I love.”

Be sure to check back with us tomorrow for the fourth part of our five-part visit to the set of Fast Five. We had a chance to speak with returning actors, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, and Sung Kang, about the franchise and reprising their roles.

Fast Five comes to theaters April 29th, 2011 and stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tego Calderon, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Dwayne Johnson, Elsa Pataky, Matt Schulze. The film is directed by Justin Lin.

That’s one way to guarantee your franchise is going to get bigger.Hot off his revenge-bent role in Faster, Dwayne Johnson brings a similar persona to Fast Five, the fifth installment of the high-octane, high-testosterone series that has raced to nearly a half-billion dollars domestically since the hot-rodders hit the big screen in 2001.Johnson will play Hobbs, a cop on the trail of street racers Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson and the familiar crew of the Furious franchise, which has managed to retain much of its talent over the years. The movie is schedule to arrive in theaters on April 29.”One of the things I’ve always loved about the franchise — the reason I think it’s been so successful over the years — is that they never stop trying to up the action,” Johnson says.Justin Lin, who has been directing the series since 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, says the challenge has been in trying to top its muscle cars and muscled stars.”If you’re going to do a Fast and Furious movie, you’ve got to go bigger each time,” says Lin. “People thought it would be impossible to get Dwayne. But he didn’t show up looking to cash a paycheck.”That’s pretty amazing, for a star like him to join the fifth part of a franchise. That says a lot about him and the fans.”Indeed, few movies have had the consistency of Furious, a rare series about the working class. The films, which have averaged $122 million in North America, have a devoted following in the Latino community.”I think what keeps it going is that it’s not really about cars,” Lin says. “I have to be honest: I’m not a big car guy. At the core, Fast and Furious is about family and how to create them.”One reason to bring on Johnson, Lin says: Someone has to chase Diesel’s leadfoot character Dom Toretto and Walker’s ex-cop Brian O’Conner, both of whom went on the lam in last year’s hit Fast & Furious, which tallied $156 million.Of course, it’s not a movie without plenty of sheet metal, and Johnson will wield the most with his Gurkha, a 10-ton armored military vehicle that looks like a Humvee on steroids.Lin says that while Furious has long subsisted on chemistry, “the vibe was electric when Dwayne walked on set. The whole crew was buzzing with him, Vin, and all these other huge action stars on one set. It was like having (Sylvester) Stallone and (Bruce) Willis in the same movie.”But who would take it in an all-out street scuffle?”Let me be direct,” Johnson says. “Put your hard-earned dollar on me.”

Dwayne Johnson Talks ‘Faster,’ ‘Fast Five,’ And Working With Tyler Perry

blacknewstribune.com

After appearing in a number of family films (‘Tooth Fairy,’ ‘Race to Witch Mountain,’ ‘The Game Plan’), comedies (‘The Other Guys,’ ‘Get Smart’), and films without being credited (Tyler Perry’s ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?,’ ‘You Again’), Dwayne Johnson is returning to the genre that started his career.

In his latest film, ‘Faster,’ the California state native stars in this high octane action drama in which he plays Driver, an ex-con looking to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his imprisonment.

Directed by George Tillman Jr., the film boasts a big cast that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Carla Gugino, Maggie Grace, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Moon Bloodgood, Mike Epps, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Tom Berenger, Michael Irby, Jennifer Carpenter, Julia Pace Mitchell, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Julius Tennon.

BlackVoices.com recently spoke with the former wrestler, who started his film career under the name, ‘The Rock,’ but has since dropped the moniker.

What led you to get back into the action genre and with this film?

Dwayne Johnson: The enticement was the material. I read the script and loved it and I knew immediately that this was a man that I wanted to become. All the characters were very well written characters that had great layers and great depth against a very simple backdrop. And that backdrop is, ‘You took something from me that I loved. My family. My only family and my brother. You ripped him away and you killed him. And you tried to kill me, but I lived and I have to go away for ten years in prison and when I get out I’m going to find every single one of you, hunt you down and I’m going to make you pay with your life.’ That simple driving forceful storyline with well written characters really attracted me. The idea of that, the idea of protecting family resonated with me and landed on me. So that was a big reason why I wanted to do the movie, and I have to tell you that I signed on to do the movie and we had a multitude of directors who were raising their hands throughout Hollywood to make this film. And George Tillman and his producing partner Bob Teitel came in and they were so well prepared that they blew everybody away, myself included. Obviously the director is such a pivotal piece of your puzzle with his vision. He came in and blew me away with his vision, but very specifically how important heart and emotion was to it, through the movie. So it was script, sitting down with George and I knew that we were off to the races.

As the star of the movie you get to work with so many of the actors in the film. What was it like working with this cast, from Mike Epps to Adewale (Akinnuoye-Agbaje) to Billy Bob [Thornton] and even Tom Berenger?

DJ: The cast was incredible to work with. Tom Berenger was great to work with. Mike Epps was phenomenal to work with. Here’s the challenge, I’ve known Mike for some time now and I’ve always loved and appreciated his work. Mike coming in, Mike is a naturally funny man, obviously, because he’s so successful at what he does, but he was very keenly aware, and this speaks to Mike’s intelligence because he was acutely aware of the subtlety that he had to bring to the scene and wanting to make sure that the tone of tension was held throughout. Often times those comedians, they want to go big because they’re used to performing big, but Mike was acutely aware of that even in that one scene because it was a pivotal scene. Adewale was wonderful to work with. I’d first met him about ten years ago when we were shooting ‘The Mummy Returns’. We didn’t have any scenes together but we were over in Morocco together shooting the movie. I didn’t get to know him that well then. I got a chance to get to know him very well on this movie and spend some time with him. He is a very intriguing guy and a powerful actor and a great presence. He plays and an evangelist in the movie who has impacted in a positive way the lives of hundreds and hundreds of kids and the movie culminates, one of the final moments of the movie is this really powerful scene between me and him. He’s a man of God and before God he asks me if I can forgive him. Being presented with that opportunity, forgiving somebody, is very powerful. I was very proud of him and the depth that he went in that scene. It required a lot. You always need a great partner in these scenes to make it work and my scene with Adewale at the end is my favorite scene in the movie.

You are having a big year this year with ‘Tooth Fairy,’ this film and a few un-credited roles. How did you end up being in ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’?

DJ: I had gotten a call from Tyler (Perry) and he said, “Hey, I have this part for you. What do you think about it? Here’s the story and here’s the part. Here’s the scene,” and I said, “I love it. I’d love to do that.” I love Tyler and I appreciate our friendship and I appreciate even more the career that he’s had and that he continues to have and the lives that he continues to impact. I’m very proud of him. It was very easy to say yes to that.

I read that you guys might be working together on a comedy called ‘Take My Wife.’ Is that true?

DJ: Absolutely, sure. That’s the goal. I would love to work with Tyler and we have a comedy in development. I would love to work with him on a variety of projects, but it all comes down to the script like with all movies. So we know that we want to work together. That’s for sure. The studio loves the idea and we’ve got our writers and they’re writing away. Now this is the fun development time.

How do you balance doing the family roles, the action films and even the small dramatic parts you’re getting? How do you decide what you want to do next?

DJ: It always just comes down to the material for me. When I read something regardless of whether it’s a comedy, action movie, drama or family film, when I read it, if I love it and I think that I’m going to have fun playing that role and I think that audiences are going to appreciate it and I can see the value in that then I go for it. I grab it and I go for it. I never wanted to be defined as an actor. This is my tenth year of acting, or pigeonholed as the actor who only did one thing. I just didn’t want to be the action guy or the comedy guy or the family guy. I wanted to be the guy who had a very diverse, varied career with the ability to transfer in genres and go back and forth and work in all of them and just continue to hopefully give consistently good performances that audiences would appreciate.

I know you’ve shot ‘Fast Five’ with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker . What’s it like to be a part of a big ensemble?

DJ: It’s great to be a part of that ensemble and to be a part of that franchise. That franchise is incredibly successful. The idea of me being in that movie just came from the studio wanting to find a formidable, believable man in Hollywood who would be able to hunt down Vin Diesel and take him out. Who could that be?

Not that many –

DJ: There are a couple of people, but Vin and I, I’ve known Vin for some time and we’ve always talked about doing something together but it had to be right. And this felt right. It felt right that we weren’t friends in the movie and we weren’t partners, that we were adversaries and that ‘I don’t like you and I’m going to find you and hunt you down.’ That’s what I like. I like that type of tension and that type of drive. I think that audiences will appreciate that, too. We wrapped that. We had a great time shooting that. We shot in Puerto Rico. We shot in Atlanta and Brazil. That’ll be out in April.

In ‘Faster’, people see you with the guns and with the cars. What was more fun to use, the guns or the cars?

DJ: Well, the car became my home and my family and the gun became my wife. I had a lot of fun. Both were a lot of fun. That car is a classic. It’s 1971 Chevelle with a super charger in it. I have gone through a lot of cars over the years and I can honestly say that there was nothing like bad ass American muscle. My favorite car to drive even today is my Ford pickup truck. The gun was obviously an important role in the movie. It had to be big enough that fit and connected to the driver and it had to be powerful enough, too. And it had to, I think, subtextually make sense. What I mean by that is that the driver is a man on a mission. There is no wasted movement. There are no big explosions. There is no big machine gun. All actions and all killings are fueled by great and powerful emotion. When that is carried out the driver finds his guy and he has one big bullet and that one bullet goes between their eyes. It’s that type gun. You wanted that type of gun.

As an actor do you feel like you’re hitting your stride in terms of the roles you’re getting? Is there anything else that you want to do, a biopic, a horror film, sci-fi?

DJ: This is a very exciting time in my career right now where I have this type of leverage and this type of flexibility. I also recognize that there are not a lot of actors in Hollywood right now who are consistently getting these types of varied roles. For example, from ‘Faster’ which is rated R to a big franchise movie like ‘Fast and Furious’ and then we go all the way to the other end of the spectrum with the big 3-D adventure that I’m shooting right now which is called ‘The Journey to Mysterious Island.’ It’s the sequel to ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth.’ It stars Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, Louis Guzman, Josh Hutcherson and it’s such a nice big cast. So having that type of variety and that type of diversity, I like that and enjoy it and I’m really grateful to have those types of opportunities. If it’s right I’d love to do a horror movie that feels good, if the script is right. I’d love to play a superhero if it feels right. I would love to do a biopic if the script is good. That’s the great part about the diversity and the great fortune that I’ve been getting to do such varied roles.

Are you comfortable now with being known as Dwayne Johnson as opposed to The Rock?

DJ: I’ve always been comfortable with it. I’ve always been comfortable with whatever they called me. I’m proud of my past and I’m proud of the wrestling career that I was able to have. People call me Rock all the time and I always say that The Rock is the brand, the brand of The Rock and Team Rock. I’m billed as Dwayne Johnson but sometimes headlines have and people call me The Rock. It’s always been very easy with me. I never wanted to make a big issue about it. I wanted it to be clean and simple and to say, “I’ll just be billed as Dwayne Johnson in movies, but you can call me Rock, The Rock, whatever it is you want.” I’ve always been very comfortable with that.

The Latest ‘FAST & FURIOUS’ FAST FIVE Poster release!!!

heyuguys.co.uk

So we had “The Fast and the Furious”, then “2 Fast 2 Furious”, then “Tokyo Drift” (quite literally), then back to basics with “Fast & Furious”. Now we have “Fast Five”, the latest instalment in the now rather long-running and successful franchise. I suppose “Furious Five” would have drawn plagiarism accusations from Dreamworks, re: Kung Fu Panda and in any event I guess they are more defined by their speed than their fury?

In all seriousness, this may not prove to be as derivative as I have made it out to be. Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster and Tyrese Gibson all return, joined by Dwayne Johnson and Ludcris and directed by Justin Lin, who directed the previous two entries as well as “Annapolis”. Screenwriter Chris Morgan also scripted the last two films, as well as Wanted and Cellular.

Film Filia have a new poster for the film, with the usual shiny cars, moody looks and gratuitous flames, all present and correct.

How do you feel? Hungry for more of this? Or not so much?
