Global Box Office: ‘Furious 7’ Soars to Staggering $800.5M

In only its second weekend, Universal’s Furious 7 hit $800.5 million at the worldwide box office in another victorious lap for the final film from the late Paul Walker and already passing up the entire global run of Fast and Furious 6.

The high-octane action pic took in another $195 million overseas from 66 markets for a foreign total of $548 million. Domestically, Furious 7 earned $60.6 million to end the weekend with a 10-day total of $252.2 million, eclipsing the $239 earned by Fast and Furious 6 in its entire run. Internationally, it will pull ahead of Fast 6‘s $550 million sometime on Monday.

The movie is No. 1 everywhere and debuted in China on Sunday to a massive $68.6 million — the biggest single-day gross in history for the world’s second-largest moviegoing market and raising the possibility that the film could ultimately beat the record-breaking $301 million earned byTransformers: Age of Extinction in summer 2014.

Furious 7 is getting the widest release of all time in China, with Sunday marking the biggest day ever in terms of attendance. The movie also made the record books in Russia, getting the widest release ever and grossing $15 million for the biggest four-day opening of all time.

In 2013, Fast 6 topped out with a franchise-best $789 million. Thanks to Furious 7, the series has now earned north of $3 billion globally for Universal ($3.18 billion to be exact). And at this rate,Furious 7 could end up with as much as $1.3 billion-$1.4 billion in global ticket sales.

“It’s a perfect storm,” said Duncan Clark, president of Universal’s international film operations.

Among holdover markets for Furious 7, Mexico leads with $39.7 million, followed by $39.1 million in the U.K., $28.3 million in Germany, $23.5 million in Brazil, $23.1 million in Australia, $20.8 million in India, $20.7 million in France, $18.8 million in Taiwan, $16.3 million in Argentina, $16.2 million in Italy and $16.1 million in South Korea.

The seventh installment is already Universal’s highest-grossing film of all time in 14 territories, including Argentina and India.

This time out, the plot pits Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and crew (which includes Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson, among others, as well as Walker) against Jason Statham’sDeckard Shaw, out for revenge after the death of his brother. Dwayne Johnson also reprises his role as Hobbs.

After Walker’s death, director James Wan, writer Chris Morgan and Universal pored over existing footage and tweaked the script, with production resuming in April 2014. To complete the film, CGI and voice effects were used in some scenes featuring Walker’s detective character, BrianO’Conner, with Walker’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, used as stand-ins.

Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel fight Jason Statham in new Fast & Furious 7 clips:

A pair of new clips have landed from Fast & Furious 7 (just Furious 7 in the US), in which Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel both go toe to toe with franchise newcomer Jason Statham in a pair of truly bone-shuddering fist-fights.

Statham is on villain duties in the new film, searching for revenge against the team that crippled his brother (Luke Evans) last time around. Top of his list? Johnson and Diesel.

Of the two showdowns, we’d say that Johnson vs. Statham probably shades it, if only for the broken glass factor. Shame the clip cuts before we see Johnson deliver the Rock Bottom…

Take a look at the new clips below…

Good to see that amid all the driving-out-of-a-plane mayhem, there’s still room in the new film for a couple of good old-fashioned punch-ups. We very much approve.

Directed by James Wan and co-starring Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson, Furious 7 will open in the UK and US on 3 April 2015.

Dwayne Johnson on late ‘Furious 7’ co-star Paul Walker: ‘I miss him, I love him’

The release of “Furious 7” is a mixed emotional bag for all of its stars, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is no exception. But as he noted on TODAY Wednesday, now that the movie’s coming out in theaters, it gives him a great chance to talk about his co-star, the late Paul Walker.
Dwayne Johnson Today Show interview pt1

“I couldn’t wait to talk about [the movie] because it’s an opportunity to talk about Paul,” he said. “I miss him, I love him. … It was an opportunity for us to try and find a balance between entertaining the audience but also paying a respectful tribute to him.”

Walker died in 2013 in a car crash while on hiatus from filming “Furious 7,” and Johnson notes, “Paul is beautifully honored at the end of the film.”

But there was lots more to talk about with Johnson, including:

Fighting ‘for real’ in the movie with Jason Statham
“He is one of the few movie stars who has a legitimate skill set in terms of fighting,” said Johnson. “We weren’t pulling a lot of punches … especially as it was in the body. If it was in the body, we thought, ‘Well, let’s just take it,’ as silly men do.”

TODAY
Suggesting Matt Lauer could appear in ‘Baywatch,’ the movie

One of Johnson’s upcoming projects is a “big, brash, rated ‘R'” take on the beach TV series, and after seeing Lauer in his 2013 “Baywatch” Halloween duds, Johnson noted, “You’ve got a lot of assets, Matt.”

He’s thrilled to host ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the fourth time this weekend
“For me, in 2000 when I first hosted, it gave me an opportunity to showcase a little bit of skill at that time, but it really broke me in terms of my career,” he said. “I love going back.”

Paul Walker’s Brothers Helping Finish Fast & Furious 7

Paul Walker's brothers to help with Fast and Furious 7

Back in March a rumor circulated that the production of Fast & Furious 7would use body doubles and facial replacement to fill in gaps in the action due to the unfortunate death of star Paul Walker. This wasn’t really all that newsworthy given facial replacement is used a lot in Hollywood, but today Universal has officially confirmed the news while adding information that it’s Walker’s brothers, Caleb and Cody Walker, that have joined the production to help out.

Here’s the official statement from the studio’s Facebook page:

“The FAST & FURIOUS saga is about family. The characters are connected by the bond of family, and it is how all of us who have worked together for more than thirteen years feel about each other. It certainly defines how we feel about our fans.

Our family experienced an unthinkable shock in November. We had to take time to grieve Paul, the brother we love and lost, and to figure out if we should move on with our film.

We came together and all felt the only choice was to continue. We believe our fans want that, and we believe Paul would want that too. Paul had already shot his dramatic scenes and most of his action for FAST & FURIOUS 7, and it’s among the strongest work of his career.

We have resumed shooting and now welcome Paul’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, into our FAST family. Caleb and Cody are helping us complete some remaining action for their brother and fill in small gaps left in production. Having them on set has made us all feel that Paul is with us too.

We are just under a year away from the release of FAST & FURIOUS 7, and this film is the most important we’ve ever done together. It will allow the character of Brian O’Conner to live on and let us celebrate Paul in his most defining role.

We wanted to take a moment to speak to our fans directly and thank you for the love and support you always show us as we resume our work.”

Cody Walker, a stuntman, was first mentioned as possibly getting involved back in December 2013 and for comparison’s sake you can see a picture of the three brothers here.

‘Fast & Furious 7’ to Resume Production in April

fast-furious-7-650x458

After the tragic, horribly ironic death of Paul Walker in a car crash in November of last year, the fate of Universal’s “Fast and Furious” franchise, which has become one of the studio’s most dependable and profitable properties, was very much up in the air.

At the time of Walker’s death, the movie was only halfway done with filming, and had a summer 2014 release date looming. Universal decided to finish the movie with director James Wan and the original cast, and shifted the release date from summer 2014 to April 10, 2015. Now The Hollywood Reporter says that the production will resume shooting this April. The wheels have started spinning again.

The sequel, which follows last year’s tremendous “Furious 6,” includes original cast members Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Ludacris, and Michelle Rodriguez, plus new cast members like Jason Statham, Kurt Russell (!), Tony Jaa, and Djimon Hounsou. Most interestingly is the fact that Lucas Black, who starred in the “Fast and Furious” one-off “Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift,” will be reintegrated into the franchise. (I love how labyrinthine the “Fast and Furious” “mythology” has become.) Plans are still for the movie to “retire” Walker’s character instead of kill him. It’s very clear that Wan and writer Chris Morgan have been working since Walker’s death on just how to sort this all out and have it make any sense in the context of the movie.

It’s unclear what other plot deviations are in store. When the movie resumes production, it will be in Atlanta (there was some time scheduled for Dubai and other exotic locations). Hopefully, Wan will be able to bring his muscle car vision to the big screen with appropriate weight and sensitivity, given the situation. Either way: can’t wait. Glad that the production is back on track and we can look forward to a new installment in the franchise in a little over a year. Vroom on!
